Why you keep ending up with WebP files
WebP is an image format Google released in 2010 and pushed hard as a replacement for both JPEG and PNG. It compresses noticeably better than JPEG at the same visual quality, and unlike JPEG it also supports transparency and animation. By around 2020 every major browser had shipped support for it.
That is why so many websites now serve WebP automatically. You right-click an image, choose save, and the file that lands in your downloads folder is a .webp — not because you asked for it, but because that is what the site sent to your browser.
Where it stops being convenient
Browsers handle WebP fine. Everything else is inconsistent. Older versions of Photoshop need a plugin. Plenty of desktop image viewers, office suites, print services and upload forms still reject the extension. Some e-commerce back offices and older content management systems will not accept it either.
The result is a file that displays perfectly in the browser you downloaded it with, and nowhere else. Converting to JPG trades a little compression efficiency for universal compatibility.
One thing to check before converting
WebP supports an alpha channel and JPG does not. If your WebP has a transparent background — common for logos, icons and product cut-outs — that transparency cannot survive the conversion and will be filled in as solid colour.
If keeping the transparency matters, convert to PNG instead. If the image is a photograph, there is no transparency to lose and JPG is the better choice: it will be substantially smaller than the equivalent PNG.

Why do websites give me WebP instead of JPG?
Because WebP files are smaller at the same visual quality, so pages load faster. Modern browsers all support it, so sites serve it automatically — even though other software often cannot open it.
Will I lose quality converting WebP to JPG?
A small amount, since both formats are lossy and the image is re-encoded. At the default quality of 85 the difference is not noticeable in normal viewing.
My WebP has a transparent background. What happens?
JPG cannot store transparency, so it will be filled with solid colour. Convert to PNG instead if you need to keep the transparent background.
Can I convert animated WebP files?
The first frame is converted. JPG is a single-image format and cannot hold animation.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Both the decoding and the encoding run inside your browser tab. There is no server involved in the conversion.
