As with the inch, the constant here is a definition rather than a measurement: the pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959, so the conversion is exact and only the display rounds. Below there is a complete 1 to 100 kg table, plus the two places this conversion goes wrong in practice — the ounce that is not an ounce, and the difference between mass and force.
The conversion, and the mental shortcut
Pounds = kilograms ÷ 0.45359237, which is the same as multiplying by 2.20462262. Going the other way, kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237.
For everyday use, double it and add ten per cent: 70 kg becomes 140 plus 14, so 154 lb against a true 154.32. That works because 2.2 is only 0.21 per cent below the real factor. If you only need the rough figure, doubling alone undershoots by about nine per cent, which is enough to fail an airline baggage limit.
Two anchors again. 45 kg is very close to 100 lb (99.2), and 100 kg is 220.5 lb. Airline hold luggage limits of 23 kg and 32 kg are 50.7 lb and 70.5 lb, which is why those two odd-looking kilogram numbers exist at all — they are the metric versions of round pound limits.
The ounce that is not the ounce
There are two ounces in daily use and they differ by ten per cent. The ordinary one, the avoirdupois ounce, is one sixteenth of a pound, or 28.3495 g. The troy ounce, used exclusively for gold, silver and platinum, is 31.1035 g. A bullion price quoted per ounce always means the troy ounce, so using the wrong one is a ten per cent error on a number that matters.
Both are available in the unit list on this page, kept as separate units rather than merged, because guessing between them silently would be the single most expensive mistake this tool could make.
A third confusion is the fluid ounce, which is not a mass at all — it is a volume, and the US and UK versions of it are different from each other as well. A recipe asking for 8 fl oz of milk is asking for a volume, and no mass converter can answer it without knowing the density.
Mass, weight and force — the distinction that actually bites
A kilogram is a unit of mass: how much matter there is. Strictly, a pound is also a unit of mass, and the corresponding unit of force is the pound-force. In everyday English the word pound is used for both, and almost nowhere does this matter, because we all live at the same gravity.
It starts to matter in three places. Engineering specifications distinguish lb and lbf and mixing them up scales your answer by 32.17. Torque figures on a car are quoted in lb-ft, which is a force times a distance and not a weight at all. And anything involving aerospace, or a spec sheet written in the US customary system, will assume you know which one it means.
For the ordinary question — how heavy is this parcel, how much do I weigh — kilograms and pounds convert directly and none of this changes the number.
Stones, and reading a British bathroom scale
The United Kingdom and Ireland still give body weight in stones and pounds. One stone is 14 pounds, so 11 stone 4 is 158 lb, which is 71.7 kg. The notation is often written 11st 4lb or just 11-4.
This is the one place where a converter that only handles kilograms and pounds leaves you stuck halfway, so the stone is in the unit list here. Note that a British reading is never "11.4 stone" — the second number is pounds out of fourteen, not a decimal.
Precision, rounding and round-tripping
The default display keeps six significant figures. That is deliberate: it is enough that converting a value to pounds and back returns exactly the kilograms you started with. Fixing the display to one or two decimals gives a tidier number but breaks that property, and the page tells you so at the moment you change the setting rather than leaving you to find out.
For a bathroom scale, two decimals is meaningless — domestic scales are accurate to a few hundred grams at best, and your weight varies by more than a kilogram across a normal day. For shipping, carriers round up to the next half kilogram or pound anyway, so the digits past the first decimal never reach the invoice.
